CBS Airs Show About Poker Cheating

Last night CBS's 60 Minutes aired a segment on the online Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet cheating scandals. I was hoping that they would have made the point the scandals were a good reason for the U.S. Government to start regulating online poker, but instead they chose to falsely try and drive home the point that online poker is illegal. They constantly brought up terms like "they couldn't complain to the US authorities, because online gambling is illegal" .

60 minutes chose to avoid the UIGEA and was misleading on the laws of online poker . For those that do not know, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) did not make online poker illegal, the purpose of that law was to prevent banks from making transfers to gambling sites offshore . Nothing in the law says anything about making online poker illegal.

I do want to say that I am glad though that they aired about the cheating scandal. I have no use for cheats, and I personally could never promote any room that was found out to be cheating anyone. I have online associates that promote Absolute and Ultimate Bet, and that is their prerogative to do so, but I think that anyone that goes to play on either of those sites should be aware of their past history. I'll stick to playing online poker at sites that I have the utmost faith in like PDC Poker .

Here's the link to the full story on 60 Minutes reporting on the AP & UB Cheating Scandal .

Bad Beat Jackpot

Today I want to try and explain exactly what a bad beat jackpot is. The reason I'm doing this is I had a family member ask what it was. (obviously they do not play online poker or they would have known) .

A bad beat jackpot is a prize that is paid when a very strong hand is shown down yet loses to an even stronger poker hand held by another player. Every site does not offer bad beat jackpots, and those that do have requirements of how strong a losing hand must be to even qualify for the jackpot.

In most cases the losing hand is required to be four-of-a-kind or better. There might even be additional requirements as well. A fine example would be PDC Poker's requirements :

  • The losing hand must be at least a Four of a Kind 7's.
  • The winning hand must be at least a Four of a Kind 8's.
  • Both the winning and losing hands must include both hole cards.
  • At least four players must be dealt in at the start of the hand.
  • The hand must have generated jackpot rake.
  • Two or more players must be active at the end of the hand, and it must go to showdown.

A small rake is taken out of each pot to fund the jackpot ( that's in addition to the regular rake for operating fees). When a jackpot is won, the prize is split among all players sitting at the online poker table at the time of the bad beat, with the losing hand getting the largest share. Right now that pot is over $688,000 with the loser on the bad beat getting 35% of the bad beat jackpot.

I know one person that won a jackpot at PDC and bought a brand new Harley Davidson with his winnings. You could be the next big winner of a huge jackpot by clicking and downloading PDC Poker !

Happy Thanksgiving from "The House"

Today I want to wish everyone a pleasant Thanksgiving Day. I'm sitting here at my desk with the smell of dressing (here in the South we don't call it stuffing) and turkey coming from the kitchen, and debating on having a piece of homemade coconut pie with my morning coffee.

With the hard economic times of our day it's sometimes easy to forget all that a person has to be thankful for. Sometimes I, being an online poker player from the U.S., worry too much about the UIGEA and the effects that it's having on the online gambling industry.

But today I want to say that I am very thankful for a lot of things in my life. I have a wife that has always been by my side (married 28 years to date), a son that made it back safe from Afghanistan, two daughters that make sure and talk to their old man each and every day :-), and six grandsons that I look forward to watching grow up hopefully.

I'm also very thankful for the online friends I have . If not for them I may not be talking today...it was due to their genorousity (unbeknownst to me at the time) that the wife and I were able to afford the operation that removed the cancer and polyps from my vocal cords. Three years ago when I started playing online poker I would never have thought that I'd be sitting here and consider folk that I know only from being online true friends, but they are out there and I hope they know who they are.

A Pretty Good Bluff

I thought today I'd post a video that I made this morning. In it I talk a bit about some of the upcoming freeroll poker tournaments that I'll be hosting, and some about this past Saturdays poker league .

Near the end I talk about getting bluffed out of a pot by the wife . I thought she done an excellent job with her bluff, and was a might surprised actually .

Anyhow, to view this weeks video just click House of Poker Blues News. I hope you enjoy.
